Ivingoi Village, Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea |
The thatched houses of Ivingoi village nestle in the lush vegetation of the Papua New Guinea Highlands. Villages are traditionally located along the ridges in this mountainous terrain; a location which would allow the inhabitants a good view of anyone intending to visit them. The Highlands receive a lot of rain, and are frequently misty. The high altitude and wet climate make the area ideal for growing coffee, and this crop provides the main source of income in many villages. In Ivingoi, the coffee beans must be driven out over miles of rugged, frequently impassable road before they can be sold.
